Junior Expansion September 2015

Kyla Grimshaw

City of Ely Junior Netball has grown.  This season the club has capacity for thirty players, aged 11 – 16 years old.

From an idea that was kindled in 2011, the first twenty junior players joined in September 2012.  Some of those original players now attend adult training.  Three attended adult club trials and will be playing their netball in Squad 1.

This is the fourth season junior players have been part of the club and competition for both U14 and U16’s is already underway.  Squads took part in the County Junior Tournament at the weekend facing some strong competition.

The Junior expansion has been supported by Greys of Ely who have donated £50 towards additional kit.  They have also provided an emery board for each player to keep their nails short and smooth as required by the England Netball rules!

Junior Netball Tournament

The City of Ely Combined Team came away as U16 runners up in Saturday’s Cambridgeshire County Junior Netball Tournament.

City won three of their four 30 minute matches, losing only to eventual winners St. Neots U16.  These two teams finished equal on points but St. Neots had a better goal difference.

City’s squad of ten players did exceptionally well because it was made up of five U14’s who played up in the competition alongside five U16’s.

Junior Netball Update

Chris White

City of Ely Junior Netball was delighted to receive royal blue club hoodies funded by a grant of £246 from Ely XT.  The hoodies have the club name emblazoned down one sleeve.

Ely XT is a charity dedicated to helping the Ely community and organising the annual fireworks display.  Club Chair, Sue Deas said “A mum of one of our junior players heard an announcement about possible funding on the evening of the Fireworks Spectacular.  We followed it up and were really pleased to be supported.  The club hoodies are much appreciated – they are warm and practical for our outdoor sport and they give us a real club identity”

The City U14 squad will be in action between April - July in the Cambridge and District Netball League Summer competition.

Club Report

CITY OF ELY and COJAGS Netball Clubs (juniors and adults) joined together to play some Red Nose Netball last Thursday evening.

The teams were a mix of players from both Clubs and by asking for a donation to join in the matches and take part in a prize draw/raffle they raised a fantastic £102 for Comic Relief, just by doing what they enjoy – playing netball!

Team Blue Moons beat Red Noses, Black Eyes and Gold Fingers in both competitions.

The King’s School kindly waived the normal cost of the netball courts to help this fundraising event.

CITY OF ELY 2 followed the success of this fundraiser by winning their Division 1 match on Saturday against JETS, 31-24.  They are in the play-off position with one league match left to play, 2 points below the next ‘safe’ club.

CITY 3 lost their Division 3 match v Bee 52’s 21 goals to 37.
